What helped us with the ray tracing errors in Lumion was repairing the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime (a common cause).
Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, search for “Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable (x64)”, click … → Modify → Repair.
If you also have the x86 entry, repair that one as well.

Yes, this is a common and unfortunately reoccurring issue. I've also found it helpful to setup up a testing criterion for performance especially if your company is running multiple computers for rendering. What I have found is some systems are not rendering to the same ability with similar hardware which is leading us to dig deeper into the why. Someone running only a single system is at a disadvantage since the only comparison is the last set of drivers or windows updates.

The most important PC spec I have come to realize is the amount of VRAM the actual GPU has. I firmly believe 16gigs is a bare minimum if you plan to render at maximum quality using the Ray tracing features. Optimize can overcome this issue but at a loss in image crispness.

Hi wdimaculangan

Sorry to hear that. The new driver will work with Lumion but not with earlier than 2025.1.

If you are using version 2025.0.2 or earlier then it is not the latest version. There is a fix for Ray Tracing and the changes in drivers that Nvidia made in version 2025.1.0 released August 26, 2025. See Section 3.4.

Update to 2025.1.0 requires a full install as in the Release Notes and this article:

Is that the case here?

Is there a compatibility issue with driver 572.70 on a GeForce RTX4090?
Lumion Pro 25.1 has been crashing more than usual, and in build more when switching layers (even if layers barely have anything in them).

Or would you now recommend updating?

Hi Mat A

Updating yes, as a matter of course in keeping the system up to date.

The latest driver is now 581.57 for the RTX 4090

Lumion shouldn't be crashing, full stop.

So I would recommend you contact us so we can take a closer look at things:
Because with 2025.1 what you are mentioning should not be happening and we need to help you by investigating the problem in more detail than we can provide here.

Sorry for the long description, but for what it is worth, as it has been somewhat frustrating for many of us.

My experience with version 2025.1.0.0pro and 4090 (all previous versions 2024 etc have been removed from the PC)
For the last few weeks i have been experiencing crashes on my PC when it is stressed. Fan noise would escalate (and not stop)
and the dual monitors would crash to black screens.
I would eventually have to do a soft shut down and re-boot.

As recommended earlier, I wound back the drivers to 577.0 for the 4090 due to the known issues.
I then updated them to a newer version (581.29) about a month or so ago when instructed that the latest drivers had sorted the issues.

Crashing continued when higher settings were selected or the PC was stressed in someway. I think it also crashed at one point when transferring local multiple files to a usb storage device. Therefore for the last month or more, i have been delicately working on projects and managing the settings to reduce PC stress.
I would still get crashes more often than i'd like to admit.

Anyway this morning, i opened a recent file i have been working on that would crash when pushed with high RT settings (extreme).
It didn't crash on lower RT settings (balanced), but it crashed again as soon as i ramped up the RT setting to max. I also crashed it whilst editing/re-scaling a custom curtain object with transparency material whilst in build mode. Once again, stressing the PC seemed to cause crashing. I was running driver 581.29

After opening this thread this morning and then updated the driver for the 4090 once again to the latest as recommended above - 581.57

I now re- tested two files that were crashing consistently (exterior and interior scene), when settings were too high.
I've maxed out the RT settings (max sample, max bounce, RT glass and water on) and rendered in 4K with some custom objects, fine nature trees, lights etc.
Customized Villa Cabera interior and a custom home exterior

No crashing! No spike in fan noise...All working.
It appears as though the latest 4090 game ready driver (581.57) has fixed it for me.
Only tested twice this morning, but these files were crashing before on a consistent basis.

Moral of the story is the 581.57 update for the 4090 appears to have fixed my crashing that has been occurring over the last few months.
Please be true🤞

Hi Peter S

Great to hear things are becoming more stable. We certainly hope that things stay that way.

Let us know if you need any help here or direct to Technical Support.
Thanks Peter.
It is more stable with Lumion, though has happened again a couple times, but not whilst using Lumion. There is a PC issue, so i'll take it to the shop to investigate. Might be an overheating issue. Not sure. Note Still running windows 10.

Hi Peter S

Sounds like the best course of action for now. A thorough deep technical test of the hardware covering all aspects such as overheating for CPU or GPU, motherboard, memory, power, transient power spikes, ability of system to maintain some sustained high peak work loads (much more essential for Lumion as it renders, especially animations), BIOS and among a few others checking for conflicting ports. Sometimes it comes down to a faulty single piece of hardware or just the age of a component/components. As well as a full clean reinstall of the OS.

Best of luck.

Hi beeperv8frt

There are no known changes in the graphics drivers to cause that.

Could be a range of possible causes, especially if things were working and the Project had the same settings as earlier.

What version of Lumion are you using? If not 2025.2.0 or at least 2025.1.0 then please update to 2025.2.0.

And contact us so we can assist to get things sorted:

Using 2025.1. Had no issues a couple days ago, didn't change any settings and i have nvidia autoupdate off yet every time i run raytrace crash,if it doesn't crash on the preview it crashes on the render. Ran a bench mark and i'm way over recommended still .I'm going to install 2025.2 tmr with the latest nvidia studio drivers . Also if anyone in power reads these msgs....how can i have auto update on and there is a new version available but nowhere on the settings page?
